FIFA 2018 World Cup– GROUP G MATCHES
Football is definitely the most beautiful game and this World Cup has sealed that definition for good yet again. Today we witnessed the Group H encounters of Columbia vs. Senegal and Japan vs. Poland.
As it happened, Columbia spectacularly defeated Senegal by 1-0 with their superb defensive and offensive skills as a whole. The whole team worked as an awesome unit which immensely contributed to this crucial win. They top Group H now with 2 wins and a loss. But this was definitely an unexpected win because Senegal was dominant in the entire first half, but they lost a lot of chances in the process.
The second half was equally exciting as Columbia revived and instilled life into their playing strategies giving their supporters a sigh of relief. They did play a couple of hasty shots which weren’t that necessary. But the breakthrough came in the 74th minute when Columbia was awarded the corner with Yeri Mina scoring a beautiful side header off to the right. The goalkeeper in a literal sense was a bit helpless as he wasn’t able to defend it and they gained the upper hand in the game.
Senegal did play brilliantly but they weren’t able to convert them into goals and in my opinion, they played brilliantly throughout this World Cup. They finished 3rd with a win, loss and a draw each with 4 points. It was definitely an emphatic win for the Columbians as they would be facing the runners-up of Group G which could be either England or Belgium which we will witness tonight.
On the other side, Japan was defeated by Poland by 1-0, but they were able to advance in the Group of 16 owing to their increase in the number of points as per the fair play system designed by FIFA. The Polish team hasn’t been impressive in this World Cup; even the presence of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was fruitless in fact as he hasn’t scored a single goal. Japan, on the other hand, have astonished the football fans and played impressively in their matches, so Japan needed to ensure that they advance in this round. Both teams played impressively with fairly an equal amount of possession, but Poland was a better team with better skillsets. Japan, on the other hand, was playing defensively as they knew that the outcome of Columbia vs. Senegal would determine their place in the Group of 16.
Finally, after a long winding first and the part of the second half, the 59th minute that is, Poland’s Jan Bednarak converted a beautiful free kick from Rafal Kurzawa. It was definitely a tense moment for Japan as they scrambled to score and they wasted too many opportunities at the time. But at the same time, the Japanese fans got to know that Columbia had scored in their game against Senegal. That sealed the fate of the Japanese team giving them the crucial 4 points but FIFA scored them high against Senegal for playing fair. Japan will be playing next against the Group G toppers which would be either England or Belgium.
